DIY Curl Activating and Defrizzing Spray

After fighting my hair all through college and after, I’ve recently vowed to embrace my natural curls.  Unfortunately, my curls had become pretty beaten up and therefore sometimes end up being a bit droopy.  In keeping with my all natural hair routine, I wanted to find an ingredient that can help increase the curliness of the hair without adding any chemicals to the mix.

Luckily, a genius little fruit called amla (otherwise known as Indian Gooseberry) saved the day!  Known for its moisturizing properties, it has been anectodally reported that amla successfully activates lack-luster curls. And I’m here to agree!

DIY Curl Activating and Defrizzing Spray

Ingredients for part 1:

Ingredients for part 2:

  • approximately 1 cup amla “tea” from part 1
  • 1/4 teaspoon vegetable glycerin
  • 5 pumps argan oil
(or approximately 20 drops if you have the kind with the dropper)
  • 1 tablespoon aloe vera juice
  • 1.5 cups warm water

Steps:

1. Grab a jar that can hold about 2 cups of water. Place a cheesecloth over the mouth of the jar, leaving some slack so that you make a sort of “pouch” to put the amla powder, and then secure it with a rubber band.  It’ll look something like this:

2. Place your amla powder over the cheesecloth and then start pour your hot water over the powder.  You’ll have to pour a small quantity at a time and then wait for it to filter through.  Basically, you’ll making an amla tea.

3. Once you’ve strained through the 2 cups of hot water, you’ll want to let your amla tea sit so that any particles that got through the cheesecloth can settle to the bottom of the jar.

4. While the amla tea sets up, pour the 1.5 cups of warm water from part 2 of the recipe into a mixing bowl.

5. Add in your vegetable glycerin to the warm water and stir until it’s all dissolved into the liquid.

6. Next, add in your agran oil and aloe vera juice, whisking well to incorporate the oil and water.

7. Pour off the top liquid layer of your amla tea (lift the jar gently so that you don’t disturb the particles that have settled) into your spray bottle.  You should have about 3/4-1 cup of amla tea.

8. Add in the water/aloe vera/argan oil mixture to the spray bottle.

9. Shake the bottle well before each use.

I use mine right after I get out of the shower, scrunching my curls as I go along.  It’s been working really well with my Protein Packed Strengthening Shampoo.

  1. How long does one recipe keep for? Does it need to be stored in refrigerator or can it be left at room temp? Do you use it daily in between washes and if so, does your hair get oily? Particularly at the roots?
